Horseshoe Symbolism.
The popular belief in the horseshoe as a magical symbol spreads from Italy through Germany and even to Great Britain and Scandinavia. It is also very common to find doors built in the shape of a horseshoe. In the Middle East, blue-glazed terracotta in the shape of a horseshoe is found. In Turkey, the horseshoe symbol has been incorporated into the famous Turkish Evil Eyes to ward off the evil eye and bad luck, etc.
There is good reason to assume that the horseshoe shape is linked to the pagan symbol of the Moon goddess found in ancient Europe represented as Artemis and Diana and that this amulet invokes the protection of the goddess herself, or more specifically, her sacred vulva. As such, the horseshoe is associated with other protective deities, such as the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is often seen standing on a crescent moon and placed within a Mandorla or Besica Piscis vulva. In most of Europe, the Middle East, and colonial Spanish Latin America, protective horseshoes were usually placed upside down, but in some parts of Ireland and Great Britain people believe that horseshoes should be placed facing heavenward.
