The Hamsa or Abhaya Mudra symbolizes protection, peace, and the dissipation of fear. Hamsa is a term of Arabic origin that means “five”, referring to the 5 fingers of the human hand. It is believed that it could be used before the beginning of Buddhism as a symbol to propose friendship when approaching a stranger. This gesture can be seen in many representations of divinities. It promises protection to the believer and frees him from fear. It also shows the strength of the divinity that performs it.
